1/28 New Music Video About Refugees
This month's song (do you know that I've been releasing an original song and music video every month for well over two-and-a-half-years?) is about refugees. I wrote this melody twelve years ago and was never able to find the right lyrics for it. I set it aside until I recently came across Warsan Shire's piercing poem, Home. I decided to excerpt some of the lyrics from her poem. Shire herself was a refugee, born in Kenya to Somali parents who immigrated to the United Kingdom when she was one. Two of my grandparents were refugees, my maternal grandfather arriving at Ellis Island with only his ability to survive, and my paternal grandmother arriving via France, Morocco, and Uruguay - all countries that refused to accept her and her family.

"[Geller's] lyrics... are insightful and deeply relevant in a confusing and frenetic world." - Jewish Woman Magazine
Julie Geller delivers her lyric-driven songs with honesty, clarity, and most of all, hope. The veins that run through Julie’s music are connection and courage. Connection, because her music makes us feel both a part of something greater and more in touch with our deepest selves. Courage, because her lyrics -- described as "insightful and deeply relevant in a confusing and frenetic world," -are about the struggle to develop into the people we know we can be.
While Julie’s overarching style is folk-rock, several of her songs are infused with Jewish musical sensibilities, giving her set a uniqueness and authenticity that merges effortlessly with her American musical influences: Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Ani DiFranco, and Michael Franti. She will be appearing at Swallow Hill with her full band.
Julie is an unstoppable creative force who recently released her sixth album. Where do all the songs come from? In Julie's words, "It's the sheer joy of creating, the exuberance of expressing something about being alive. Art moves us when it is real, not when it's perfect. That's what I focus on . . . getting to what’s most real.”
Recently chosen as one of the Top 25 Women changing the world by Conversations Magazine and invited to the White House in 2014, Julie is fearless in her drive to create and her desire to help others through her music. As a solo artist and with her band, Julie has performed throughout the U.S. as well as in Canada and Israel. In addition to concerts, Julie also performs at meetings, conferences, workshops, services, and wherever music that supports heart, hope, humor and inspiration is needed.
