1. Catch Me if You Can

This songs is about how romantic love changes over time.

I wrote this for my husband, Josh, for our 15th anniversary.

LYRICS:
Breakfast on the table
Any chance you’re are able
To drive the kids off to school?
I’ll go make the lunches
While you do your crunches
Anybody seen my shoes?

Coffee getting colder
Food is getting older
Tired children wake and groan
Tonight I've got a concert
Oh you’ve got a meeting
Can we leave the kids alone?

CHORUS:
But oooh catch me if you can
We’re chasing down our dreams
In a big ol’ minivan
Oooh now look at where we are
It may be kinda messy
But I’d say we've come far

Oooh I’m looking right at you
I know that I’m not perfect
But, hey what can we do?
Oooh just wanted you to know
I still love you
I still love you

Piling in the car to
Drive out really far to
Find another water slide
Baby sleeping back seat
In the family taxi
Going out for a ride

Seconds into minutes
Minutes into hours
Hours into months and years
Someone got an owie
Of course, and you know how we
Kiss away all the tears

CHORUS

Oooh we've got a chance
At making some sweet romance
Now the kids are sleeping in their own beds

But someone’s calling “Mommy!”
Stepping over laundry
Tiny footsteps in the hall
Be back in a sec, Dear
And while you wait here
Try not to sleep at all

Did you ever eat dinner
I left it in a tin or
Maybe in a Tupperware
Can I just have a minute
To talk to you tomorrow
Or maybe it’ll be next year

But oooh catch me if you can
I knew that you were cute
And I knew you were my man

Oooh now look at were we are
I know I’m not an angel
And you’re not a movie star

But oooh I'm looking right at you
I’ve got some fun ideas
Of some thing that we could do

Oooh just wanted you to know
I still love you
I still love you

2. Raise Your Hand

This is my love song to the Jewish people.

LYRICS:
Raise your hand if you were running out of Egypt
Raise your hand if you were walking through the sea
Raise your hand if you were filled with awe and wonder
As you tread over the dry bed were you walking next to me

Raise your hand if you were wandering through the desert
Raise your hand if you were lost for forty years
Raise your hand if you were standing at Mount Sinai
Trembling with emotion and broken down with tears

Raise your hand if you were in the tent with Abraham
Raise your hand if you saw the angels come
Raise your hand if you were laughing there with Sarah
And you knew that in that moment a people had begun

So tell me, were you on the mount with Isaac
Were you standing with Rebecca at the well
If you were then you new that one day
You'd have quite a story you could tell

Were you witness to the pain of unloved Leah
Or the hurt of Rachel pleading for a child
Were you in the pit when Joseph's brothers sold him
And his father thought that he was killed by something wild

And the prophets and the sages and the martyrs
And the generations come and gone before
Raise your hand if you prayed in the Holy Temple
Poured your heart right out like you had never done before

Were you there when the camps were liberated
Are you with us now as we rebuild
Were you standing next to David Ben Gurion
When a 2,000 year-old dream was fulfilled

So raise your hand if you will lead us to the future
Raise your hand if you are rooted in the past
Raise your hand if you are living in the present
This moment is right now, this moment will not last

Raise your hand if you are running out of Egypt
Raise your hand if you are walking through the sea
Raise your hand if you are filled with awe and wonder
As you tread over the dry bed are you walking next to me

3. Hey Girl

I wrote this song for teenage girls. Growing up is tough and I want them to know that they're OK just as they are. Everybody is going to want you to fit in, but you do your own thing.

LYRICS
She sits alone and cries
Her room has seen
A thousand teardrops
She knows the lows and highs
Yeah, those she feels

It seems like growing up
These days
Well, it just gets harder
We know it’s tough enough
To be real

CHORUS:
Hey girl
Don’t you ever say you’re nothing special
Hey girl
Don’t you tell me you’re not beautiful
Because you’re
The only one ever like you
In this
In this entire world

She sees those glossy magazines
Those women, well they look so pretty
Is this what beauty means?
Just be numb

But she has big dreams too
Her future, well how will she get there?
When it seems what you gotta do is
Is play it dumb

CHORUS

So take a chance, take the shot
Show us what it is you got
Stand up tall, show some poise
Use your brains and use that voice
Get on up
When you fall
I know you will
But most of all
Believe in yourself
Na na….

CHORUS

Hey girl
Don’t you ever say that you can’t do it
Hey girl
Cuz I know there’s nothing you can’t do
And this world’s
Gonna want you
To fit right into it
But you just be you

4. Please Don't Go

I wrote this song when my oldest child was eleven and was starting to leave pieces of his childhood behind and enter teenage hood. Although I was happy to see him grow up and come into his own more, it also made me sad.

LYRICS:
Time is slipping though my fingers
(Please don't go)
And in those spaces memories linger
(Please don't go)
Seems yesterday you were in my belly
(Please don't go)
Now I hug you when you let me
(Please don't go)

When the night comes round
Moon hangs in the sky
I look to the ground
Scared we'll say goodbye

I can't say what this life's made of
(Please don't go)
Except broken hearts and joy and pure love
(Please don't go)
And even with ache of living
(Please don't go)
I want you to give and then keep giving
(Please don't go)

Do you hear the sound
Snowflakes all around
When you're lost or found
I will shelter you

And so the Earth it keeps on turning
(Please don't go)
We fall and fail and still we're learning
(Please don't go)
We raise our hands to heaven and we
Want to know
What it is we're doing here and
When we'll go

Oooh please don't go
Oooh please don't go
Oooh please don't go
Oooh please don't go

Guitar: John McVey

5. Da (Know) - דע

I wrote this song in memory of my Grandmother who passed away in January of 2015. I wrote it two weeks after she died.

"Know from where you come and to where you are going: to the Holy One." - excerpted from Ethics of the Fathers 3:1

דע מאין באת ולאן אתה הולך לפלי מלך מלכי המלכים הקדש ברוך הוא

6. Into the Light

I wrote this song for the scared little girl who lives inside of me. I wanted to find out how I could get her to be less afraid and how I could help her.

LYRICS
Sweet little girl I know you’re hiding in there
Sweet little girlI know you're scared
And the truth, and the truth is I am, too
And I don't know just what to do

Oh my sweet darling tell me what can i say?
Its not your fault, life’s just that way
Did you hear what I said, did you hear?
It’s not your fault. You did nothing wrong

CHORUS:
Come on out, come on out
Into the light
Come on out, come on out
Into the light
Come on out, come on out
Into the light
Into the light
Into the light

Sweet little baby now it’s just me and you
I can only get better if I heal you, too
Tell me what, tell me what
Do you need to be free?

CHORUS

And I’ll do everything I can
To let you know you’re safe and loved
Yes, I’ll do everything I can
To let you know you’re safe and loved, so

CHORUS

7. Shine (Hanukkah Song)

Hanukkah is always a party!

LYRICS

CHORUS:
Hanukkah is here tonight
Let’s fill this world with love and light
Shine so bright that we can see
Will you shine, will you shine with me?
Will you shine, will you shine with me?

We’re lighting our menorahs
Yes, we’re watching dancing flames
Appreciating miracles
From long ago and every day

We’re strong when we’re together
And we fall when we’re apart
So we can light a little candle and
Spread a little spark

CHORUS

We’re spinning all these dreidels
Yes, we’re playing on the floor
They’re spinning round and round
Like we don’t know what’s what anymore

Cuz sometimes is the darkness
When we don't know what to do
Is when we finally find the light
That will lead us safely through

CHORUS

Radiant candles
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Every day more warmth and joy
More light to celebrate

Hanukkah  is here tonight
Let’s fill this world with love and light
Shine so bright that we can see
Will you shine, will you shine with me?
Will you shine, will you shine with me?

8. Alive

I was inspired to write this after reading The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael A. Singer. It somehow made all of my problem seem small.

LYRICS
I don’t wanna be right
I just wanna be happy
I just wanna be happy cuz I’m here
And I know what everybody says
But I think these are the good old days
So I’m gonna get happy

Cuz were alive
Oh yeah
Alive, alive alive, alive
We got everything we need
We got sun and food and air to breathe
So let’s get happy

Take another deep breathe in
Take another deep breathe out
It aint no hokey pokey
But that’s what it’s all about
I’m a speck on a planet spinning in space
So I’m gonna put a smile on my face
And I’m gonna get happy

CHORUS

See, the mind is a crazy thing
It can tell you everything
Every little thing that’s wrong with paradise
So, thank you but no thank you brain
You’re slowly driving me insane
I’m gonna ignore you and get happy

Cuz were alive
Oh yeah
Alive, alive alive, alive
We got everything we need
We got sun and food and air to breathe
Just living in the mystery
Cuz I don’t know what to believe
Just a piece of history
Like one and one and one is three
So come on be my baby
Come along and dance with me
And lets be happy
Make it snappy
This is kinda scrappy
love you till it’s sappy
Happy.

Vocals:  Julie Geller
Bass, Drums, Guitar, and Vocals: John McVey
Accordion, Piano: Eric Moon
Additional Vocals: Rivka Cohen, Hannah Pearlman, Jonathan Pearlman

9. One Day

One day love will be the way.

LYRICS
I'm always looking forward now
Never looking back
What's past
Is past
No more grinding of the axe ^
Cuz happy is a choice
Like speaking up your voice
Like words instead of force
Like a thank you to the source

Cuz i could think of many things
That gimme bad dreams
I could scream from the themes
Is it really as it seems?
Got the fear going
Heart thumping
Scared that you are up to something
What's that sound?
Look you and down
Fear is all around, but

CHORUS:
One day
One day love will be the way
One day love will be the way (x2)

I see you walking by
Don't want to catch your eye
Don't know why
But it makes me want to try
Cuz see, you're my mirror
So I can see clearer

What's that music in your ears
Is it spewing love or fear?
You and me we're not so different
Both of us magnificent
So we might have different views
What should I do
To understand you
I'll go walking in your shoes, cause

CHORUS

And i can't wait till tomorrow
Can't wait to see what it brings
Open up your heart now
And sing and sing and sing

I say come out of your corner
I say come out of your spot
We gotta work together
This world needs us a lot
You can sing the melody
I can sing the harmony
Put it all together
We're double
What we used to be
Cuz I'm your sister
You're my brother
C'mon c'mon
We gotta help each other
There's enough fear in this world today
That's why I always pray that

CHORUS

10. Ana Avda (I am Your Servant) - אנא עבדא

These Aramaic words move me deeply. They set me  on my path. When I know that I answer only to God, I don't have to care about what other people think, or fame, or wealth or status. It's only between me and God.

1. Gates of Love  (Rosh Hashanah)

The idea for this song came to me as I was praying the neilah (closing) prayer of Yom Kippur in synagogue. The liturgy kept referencing how the gates were closing and it was our last chance to get our prayers through the heavenly gates. I asked myself what gates I was hoping to have open in my life the following year and the answer came to me quickly: the gates of love.

Vocals: Julie Geller; Bass, Drums, Guitar: Josh McVey; Keyboard: Eric Moon; Recorded and mixed by John McVey at Coupe Studios Music and Sound Design, Boulder, CO

Another year has come and gone
Another year is over
The time has come to look inside and wonder Who it is I was this year
And who it is I meant to be
And why is it hard to say the words
And act the ways that make us feel so free
We do our best as we go, whoa
If there’s one thing I’d like to know, it’s
Can you sense it in the air
And can you see it in the dust
And can you feel the angels lifting lifting us?
We’re standing on the shoulders
Of the ones who came before us
And we’re planting
For the ones who will outlive us
And we’re knocking on that door
Knocking on that door
Knocking down that door
Hey open up the gates of love
Open up the gates of love

Now’s the beginning of a new year
Now’s the beginning of a new chance
To leave behind whatever makes you
Blame it on our circumstance
Now we can give thanks
Forgive and throw off the chains
Life is a passing shadow
Life is like a dream that flies away
And we can see that every day
So let’s take a chance I say

CHORUS

Love...

Sometimes it’s hard to start
We don’t know what to do
Because the world is going mad
We need something to pull us through
We try to hold on tight
We try to do what’s right
We thank you for the good times
And we thank you for the hard times, too

Cuz that’s what makes us me and you
Hold on now, we’re gonna get through

CHORUS

Love...

2. Sheya'alu

I noticed this prayer in the Artscroll Machzor (high holiday prayer book) during Rosh Hashanah services. May it be Your will that these angels arise out of the shofar before Your holy throne and advocate on our behalf rod You to forgive our sins.

Vocals: Julie Geller; Guitar: Josh McVey

3. Hareini Mochel (Yom Kippur)

We say this prayer every night before going to sleep: I hereby forgive anyone who angered, provoked, or wronged me today.  What amazes me about this prayer is that we say it at the end of the day when lying in bed. Alone. To me, this shows that forgiveness is a one-way street. We forgive in order to move on with our own lives, not to let the one who wronged us off the hook.  Looking for some inspiration around forgiveness? Check out The Forgiveness Project.  I've drawn much inspiration from this website over the years.

Vocals, Guitar, Drums: Julie Geller; Bass, Ukulele; Yaniv Salzberg

4. I Believe in Miracles (Hanukkah)

Hanukkah is the season of miracles! It's time to notice all the miracles - large and small - that occur in our lives every day.

Vocals: Julie Geller; Bass, Drums, Guitar: John McVey; Accordion and Piano: Eric Moon; Additional Vocals: Noah, Arinn, Aliza, Max and Isaac Makovsky; Recorded and mixed by John McVey at Coupe Studios Music and Sound Design, Boulder, CO

I Believe in Miracles

Come on out of the darkness into the light
We’re going to reach the highest heights
We’re going to love with all our might
For Chanukah eight days and nights
So like a dreidel spin around
And please be sure to make a sound
Saying thank you for this holy ground
And all your miracles

Cuz sometimes in the dark we go astray
Sometimes in the dark we lose our way
Sometime we just don’t know what to say
Wish all this pain would go away
So we say thank you for these flames
Do what we can to praise the name
Of the One who gives us
All the miracles

CHORUS
Cuz I believe in miracles
I believe, I believe whoa In miracles
Yes, I believe in miracles
I believe, I believe whoa In miracles

And though there is no Temple in these parts
We each have a temple in our hearts
And through all our stops and starts
Each of us must play our part
Like when the oil burned eight days
When our troubles go away
When things happen every single day
That are miracles

Like today I was walking down the street
Had these shoes upon my feet
Looking up at the bluest skies above
Walking with a heart full of love
And then when I was breathing in your air
Feeling like I didn’t even have a care
So I said a little prayer
Sayin thank you for the miracles

CHORUS

So shine your light whoa
And show us what you’re made of
Shine your light and show us who you are
So shine your light and know
There’s nothing to be afraid of
Shine your light
Cuz you are a shining star

CHORUS

5. Hanukkah Hymn - Al Hanisim (Hanukkah)

I wrote this song during the fall of 2012 when many global events were making me feel afraid. I remember in particular that Israel was under siege and that the American Ambassador to Libya was brutally murdered.  I needed to write a song that gave me hope even in dark times, which is one of the messages of Hanukkah. The Hebrew words are taken from the Al Hanisim prayer, said during the holidays of Hanukkah and Purim: We thank You for the miracles, the salvation, the mighty deeds, the victories and the battles You performed for our ancestors in those days at this time.

Vocals: Julie Geller; Guitar: John McVey; Drums; Christian Teele; Additional Vocals:  Eli Bilmes, Rivka Cohen, Eric Shafran, Karli Sherwinter; Recorded and mixed by John McVey at Coupe Studios Music and Sound Design, Boulder, CO

Look into my eyes
Cuz I can see your fire
I can see your fire
And it’s burning so deeply

No one wants to be
Lost  in between
We don’t wanna live in darkness
We just lose our way
No we don’t wanna live in darkness
We just lose our way

If one drop of oil
Yes, one drop of oil
Lasted for eight days
Well, it lasted for eight nights
Then open up your eyes
Yes, open up your eyes
To the miracles of life
That are in our sight
Yes, the miracles of life
They are in our sight

So come on say it loud
Come on say it proud
This is who I am
Yes, this is who I am
Cuz in these darkest hours
It’s easy to become afraid
Let’s shine a billion lights
To illuminate the way
Let’s shine a billion lights
To illuminate the way

Al hanisim
Vial hapurkan
Vial hagvurot
Vial hatshuot
Vial hamilchamot
Sheasitah laavoteynu
Bayamin hahem
Baziman hazeh

Thank you for the miracles
Thank you for these lights
Thank you for the ones we love
They help us burn so bright
And we pray for the day to come
When love will light our way
When love will be the answer
Each and every day
Yes, love is the answer
Each and every day

Al hanisim
Vial hapurkan
Vial hagvurot
Vial hatshuot
Vial hamilchamot
Sheasitah laavoteynu

6. Shoshanat Ya'akov (Purim)

We recite these words after we read the megillah on Purim: The rose of Jacob was cheerful and happy when they saw Mordechai wearing royal blue. Purim is a holiday of joy and acknowledging that things are often different than they appear. So, I thought, why not put a country and western spin on an old favorite? A little note: I was recording this song late at night when my ten-year-old son came down to my studio unable to sleep. He asked if he could listen to the song that I was working on. I played this song for him and he came up with the idea of singing two parts together. I put him to work on the spot and we were able to mix him into the song. The moral of the story is: If you stay up really late, you may find yourself singing on a CD.

7. Part the Waters (Passover)

A friend of a friend who is a Hebrew school music teacher called me and asked if I might have time to write a new Passover song for her students. Of course I said yes. I was especially happy to highlight Nachson ben Aminadav in this song. When everybody else was afraid to walk into the Reed Sea, he walked in - all the way up to his nose! - before the water split. That to me is true leadership.

Vocals, Guitar, Shaker; Julie Geller: Bass, Additional Guitar: Yaniv Salzberg

Part the waters
Part, part the waters
Part the waters
Walk on on through, yes walk on through (x2)
The Jews were running out of Egypt Swiftly as could be
But no one knew just what would happen When they reached the Sea
They were getting scared
And many thought that they would drown But God would not let them go down God would not let them go down
Part the waters
Part, part the waters
Part the waters
Walk on on through, yes walk on through (x2)
Then Moses said to Israel
“Have no fear you’re not alone”
And then he raised his staff
And then a brave man named Nachson Walked into the sea
Up to his nose and did not quit
And then the waters split
And then the waters split
Part the waters
Part, part the waters
Part the waters
Walk on on through, yes walk on through (x2)
And then the Jews walked through the sea
And reached the other side
And the Egyptians never made it Through the sea alive
Then Moses, Miriam and the Jews Danced and sang the whole day long They thanked God with their songs Yes, they thanked God with their songs
Part the waters
Part, part the waters
Part the waters
Walk on on through, yes walk on through (x4)

8. Bishvili Nivra Haolam (Tisha B'av)

This song was inspired by a class I took with Rabbi Sharon Brous. In it, we discussed how to balance these two consiousnesses: The world was created for me (Sanhedrin 37A) and I am dust and ashes (Genesis 18:27).  I think about this almost daily - the race to make something of my time on this Earth while also accepting that my existence in the scheme of the universe is basically nothing.

Vocals, Piano, Keyboards; Julie Geller: Additional Vocals: Ilan Fine, Josh Fine and Ivan Geller

9. You Are My Greatest Adventure (Tu B'av)

Tu B'av is the Jewish holiday of love! I wrote this song for the wedding of my dear friends Rebecca and Luis. Rebecca and I grew up together and have been friends for over 25 years. She carved out her own path, spending many years doing development work in East Timor, and that is where she met Luis. They travel the world together (often on bike) and have many wonderful adventures.  Had we lived closer, they would have figured much more prominently in the video (look for their wedding picture when I sing "I want to spend my life with you.")

Vocals, Piano, Guitar, Drums; Julie Geller

Pack a bag
Let’s get on board
Wanna see this great big world with you
With you
Don’t know where we’re gonna go
We’re just gonna let it flow on through
On through

CHORUS:
Cuz you are
You are my greatest adventure
You are the one I love
Yes you are
You are my greatest adventure
You are
The one I love
And some days we’ll just sit at home
Cuz with you I know I’ll never feel alone
Alone
Cuz all that matter’s what we give
We never cared too much bout what we’ve own
We own
CHORUS

And can we save this word together, Dear?
Doing all that we can do
And can we leave this place
A little better than it was?
Than it was
So now we take a moment to
Commit to me and I commit to you
To you

With laughter as our guiding star
And with us knowing who we are, its true
I want to spend my life with you

CHORUS

10. Holstee Manifesto (Elul)

Elul, the month leading up to the High Holidays, is a contemplative time. I thought this setting of the Holstee Manifesto would be perfect for that time of year.  Holstee is a printing company that collaborates with artists to bring meaning to offices and homes. What do you think of this little manifesto of theirs?
