Julie Geller

Short Bio:

Julie Geller's mission is to bring love and healing into the world through her music. Her unique blend of original Hebrew and inspiring English music has been hailed as "powerful and refreshing."   She does this by setting ancient Hebrew texts to music or by - in the words of one music critic - " marrying quality lyrics with soothing music."  You might find her playing at large venues with a full band, or perhaps in your living room. She will likely have a guitar strapped to her, or maybe she's playing the piano. If you're lucky, a kazoo.  She has released four CDs and two singles, many under her own Beating Heart Music record label.

Having worked as a singer/songwriter for over twenty years, Julie has learned what it takes to overcome the obstacles to creativity. She uses that experience to help others, and facilitates artist classes at the Kabbalah Experience in Denver, CO, and runs artist workshops around the country. Through her music and teaching, Julie empowers others find their singular voices and bring their visions into fruition.

Julie is a graduate of Harvard University and New England Conservatory of Music. She studied at Bar Ilan University and Midreshet Lindenbaum in Israel. She currently serves as the Musical Director for Radio Chavura and lives in Denver with her husband and three children next door to her childhood home.

Long Bio:

Julie Geller, a Denver-based folk and Jewish singer/songwriter, has been writing and performing songs since a friend showed her a C chord on the piano in the tenth grade. At that moment, she had her first glimpse into who she was: a songwriter.

Julie released her first full-length album, This Road (Riparius Records), in 2003. It was produced by NewSong's Gar Ragland and featured drummer Richie Barshay (Herbie Hancock Quartet, Chick Corea, The Klezmatics) vocalist Heather Masse (The Wailin' Jennys), and pianist James Carson.

In 2008, Julie founded Beating Heart Music and Beating Heart Records, and released Step Into Shabbat (Beating Heart Records). The album is a guide for a joyful Friday night experience and was created in conjunction with Stepping Stones, an organization dedicated to welcoming, supporting and educating unaffiliated interfaith couples and families.

In 2010, Julie released You're With Me. Her third album, this is her most moving to date. Of the eleven tracks on the album, nine are in English and two are in Hebrew. She is also simultaneously releasing two other works: the single If You Believe, from which a portion of the proceeds benefit the Journey Institute; and a Jewish Music Sampler, for those who are looking for the best of new Jewish Music. The Jewish Music Sampler features the best Jewish songs from all of Julie's albums as well as the exultant track Hodu Lo and a spirited live recording of Adon Olam. Julie collaborated with producer John McVey on all three projects and all are were released on Beating Heart Records.

In 2012, Julie released the song and video for the single Chanukah Hymn (Al Hanisim), a song about being true to ourselves in spite of fear. One listener wrote that "this song is itself a miracle: Many American themes, but not in their usual contrived, universalist way - but miraculously speaking also to out deepest and most sacred tribal values and traditions."

Julie plays extensively around Colorado and has also toured around the United States and Israel. She has played at numerous colleges, music venues, synagogues, churches, and at Limmud Colorado. She is equally at home in the folk and the Jewish scenes, and she seamlessly integrates both English and Hebrew music into her shows. In addition, Julie also teaches workshops around the country about how to access one's creative potential and how to succeed as an independent musician. She is on the faculty of Kabbalah Experience and has collaborated with Kate Bradley, founder of Outlandos Music.

Julie holds an honors BA from Harvard University in Visual and Environmental Studies and a Certificate of Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Ran Blake and Hankus Netsky (The Klezmer Conservatory Band). In addition, she completed a year of coursework in Ethnomusicology at Bar Ilan University in Israel.

Julie continues to write, tour, teach, and record, in addition to raising her three young children with her husband, Josh. She and her family live next door to her childhood home.
